Aghaboe Priory

The stone ruins of Aghaboe Priory include a church with a three-light window in the east wall and doorways in the north and west walls.

Saint Canice established the original monastery in 576, which was later reconstructed as an Augustinian priory after a fire destroyed it in 1234.

The priory served as a center for education where monks studied and practiced disciplines including geometry, astronomy, and religious manuscripts preparation.

The remains of Aghaboe Priory stand as part of the Laois Heritage Trail, located 30 minutes southwest of Portlaoise with public access to the grounds.

Finghin Fitzpatrick transferred the priory to Dominican monks in 1382, who maintained their presence for 400 years despite mid-16th century religious suppressions.
