Kilmeena, Civil parish in County Mayo, Ireland

Kilmeena is a civil parish and small village near Westport in County Mayo, in the province of Connacht. It has a Roman Catholic church, an An Post post office and a national (primary) school. The village is overlooked by the mountains that IRA volunteers crossed towards Skerdagh in May 1921.

On 19 May 1921, during the Irish War of Independence, British troops surprised an IRA ambush party at Kilmeena. Five IRA men were killed and four wounded and captured; the rest of the column fled over the mountains to Skerdagh. One Royal Irish Constabulary man and one Black and Tan were also killed in the action.

The Irish name Cill Mhíona is still used for the village and civil parish. Gaelic games run through local life: Kilmeena GAA Club was founded in 1889, first fielded a football team against Westport on 10 March 1889, and its grounds at Saint Brendan's Park opened in 1938. In 2022 the club won the All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship, beating Gneeveguilla of County Kerry at Croke Park.

Local roads connect the parish to Westport, though public transportation is sparse in the area. Having your own transport makes exploring the countryside much easier.

The Irish name Cill Mhíona likely means "church of the bog" or "church of the moss" (míon meaning bog or moss), a detail visible on road signs where the Irish form appears alongside the English. The parish also gave its name to the 1884 song "Sweet Flower of Kilmeena" by George Cooper and John Rogers Thomas.
