The park encompasses 2,000 hectares of mountains, bogs, heaths, grasslands, and woodlands within the Twelve Bens mountain range, featuring diverse ecosystems and geological formations.

The land belonged to Kylemore Abbey Estate and Letterfrack Industrial School before its establishment as a national park by the Irish government in 1980.

The preservation efforts reflect traditional Irish land management practices, maintaining natural habitats while allowing sustainable recreation and environmental education programs.

Visitors can choose from four marked walking trails of varying difficulty levels, starting at the main entrance near Letterfrack village along the N59 road.
