Athlone Castle, Medieval castle in Athlone, Ireland
The stone stronghold stands at the crossing point of the River Shannon, featuring a central keep and drum towers within defensive walls.
The original wooden structure from 1129 was replaced in 1210 by King John's stone castle, which became a strategic control point.
The castle houses eight exhibition spaces that display artifacts, 3D maps, and illustrations depicting the development of Athlone through centuries.
The visitor center provides audio guides in six languages and includes a cafe with indoor seating for 16 people plus outdoor space.
A 360-degree audiovisual presentation allows visitors to experience the intense 1691 siege of Athlone within the castle walls.
