Glasnevin Cemetery, National cemetery in Glasnevin, Dublin, Ireland

Glasnevin Cemetery is a large burial ground in Dublin featuring rows of ornate monuments, traditional Celtic crosses, and Italian marble gravestones throughout its grounds. The site contains graves from different periods and communities, with various architectural styles reflecting the tastes and traditions of different eras.

Daniel O'Connell founded this burial ground in 1832 to give Irish Catholics a dedicated space for funerals free from Protestant restrictions. This creation marked an important step in securing religious freedom for the Catholic community.

Graves of Michael Collins, Eamon de Valera, and many others involved in Ireland's independence movement draw visitors seeking to pay respects. The cemetery serves as a place where people come to reflect on these historical figures who shaped the nation.

Visitors can walk through the grounds on well-maintained paths and explore both recent and older burial sites. Guided tours and genealogical records are available to help locate specific graves and learn about the people buried there.

During the nineteenth century, high stone walls with watchtowers protected the grounds from grave robbers. Bloodhounds patrolled the site to ensure security and deter those attempting to disturb the burials.
