Kilcash Castle, Medieval castle in County Tipperary, Ireland
Kilcash Castle is a medieval castle in County Tipperary featuring a fortified tower built in the 1500s with an adjoining hall added during later periods. The structure stands on a raised site and shows remains from multiple phases of construction.
The Butler family acquired Kilcash Castle following the Irish Confederate Wars and held it for centuries until selling it to the Irish State in 1997. The transfer marked a shift from private to public stewardship of the site.
The medieval cemetery beside the castle holds a Butler family mausoleum and numerous gravestones carved with detailed patterns from the 1700s.
The castle is currently undergoing restoration work, but visitors can see the structure from the N24 road west of Ballydine. The site remains accessible from the roadside without needing to enter the grounds.
The ruins inspired a traditional Irish song that laments its decay and honors Margaret Magennis, Viscountess Iveagh. The song keeps alive the memory of this family member and her ties to the place.
