Kilronan Castle, Country house in County Roscommon, Ireland

Kilronan Castle is a large country house of two storeys with an irregular plan, standing in 40 acres of parkland on the shore of Lough Meelagh. Its 1880s Gothic Revival extension, built for the 8th Earl of Kingston, includes a large baronial tower next to the older c.1820 block. The house now operates as a spa hotel.

The estate belonged to the Dundas family until 1715, when Richard Tenison bought it; it stayed with the Tenison and King-Tenison family for generations. Edward King-Tenison died in 1878, and his son-in-law Henry King-Tenison, 8th Earl of Kingston, built the Gothic Revival extension in the 1880s. After his death in 1896 the house was seldom occupied, and the Hanly group converted it into a hotel in 2006.

The name Kilronan comes from the Irish Caisleán Chill Rónáin, and the estate was long called Castle Tenison after the family that bought it in 1715. The 8th Earl of Kingston built the Gothic Revival extension in the 1880s, and since 2006 the Hanly group has run the house as a hotel.

The house stands 2 km from Ballyfarnon in County Roscommon, on the shore of Lough Meelagh within 40 acres of parkland. As a hotel, it is reached by road from the village; the grounds and public rooms are open to guests staying or dining there.

The 1880s Gothic Revival extension was built by Henry King-Tenison, 8th Earl of Kingston, who had inherited the title from his brother and taken the King-Tenison name. Much of the surrounding estate land was sold off during his ownership, so the house now stands within 40 acres of parkland.
