The foundation stone was laid in 1825, and the structure was completed in 1826 as a parish church for the Diocese of Cloyne and Ross.
The interior houses an altarpiece created by Irish painter Samuel Forde, which remains preserved in the church of St. Barrahane in Castlehaven.
