Kelly's Cave, Solutional cave and national monument in County Mayo, Ireland
Kelly's Cave is a limestone cavern with two rectangular chambers connected by stone steps and linked to an underground river system. The interior features stone benches cut into the walls and a natural opening in the roof that allows light to enter.
The cave took its name from a fugitive who sought shelter there following the 1798 Irish Rebellion. It became a refuge for those escaping persecution during that turbulent era.
Local stories tell of a family living in the cave during times of religious persecution, with the resident turning to robbery to survive. These tales remain part of the community's oral history.
The entrance requires descending stone steps, so visitors should move carefully through the narrow passage. Bring a light source since natural illumination from the roof opening can be limited on darker days.
The cave formed in Carboniferous limestone and displays geological patterns that reveal how the rock changed over time. Located about 500 meters northeast of Cong, it offers visitors a direct look at how natural water systems shaped the landscape.
