Aghalard Castle, Medieval tower house in County Mayo, Ireland
The three-story stone structure includes square turrets and stands enclosed by a defensive wall known as a bawn in the Irish countryside.
Built around 1490 by the McDonnells of Knocknacloy, the castle was captured in 1596 by Edward Brabazon before being evacuated due to O'Donnell's forces.
The castle represents the role of gallowglass families who served Irish lords, reflecting the military and social structures of medieval Ireland.
Access to the ruins requires navigating the rural roads south of Castlebar, with coordinates at latitude 53.55623 and longitude -9.299328.
The McDonnell family maintained ownership of the castle until the 1800s when Sir Benjamin Guinness, the famous brewing magnate, purchased the property.
