The four-story stone tower house features gables on its east and west walls, with visible traces of a bartizan on the western side.
Sir John MacOliver Burke expanded the original 13th-century structure in 1574 by adding two additional stories and corner fireplaces to the castle.
The castle stands as one of Ireland's national monuments, representing architectural developments and construction methods from medieval times through the 16th century.
Located 3.2 kilometers southwest of Shrule along the Black River, this free-access monument provides opportunities for historical exploration and photography.
The castle walls now serve as a natural habitat and nesting location for colonies of common swift birds throughout the year.
