Kinlough Castle

Kinlough Castle is a four-story stone tower in County Mayo that features gables on its east and west walls, with visible traces of a bartizan projecting from the western side. The structure displays typical characteristics of medieval Irish castle-building and retains architectural details that reveal past construction methods.

The original tower dates to the 13th century, but underwent major enlargement in 1574 when Sir John MacOliver Burke added two additional stories and corner fireplaces to strengthen the structure. This expansion reflected the increasing power and wealth of the Burke family in the region.

The castle stands as one of Ireland's national monuments, representing architectural developments and construction methods from medieval times through the 16th century.

The ruin sits about three kilometers southwest of Shrule near the Black River and is open to visitors without charge. The site offers good opportunities for exploration and photography, but you should wear sturdy shoes and take care when walking around the remaining structure.

The walls now host colonies of common swifts that nest throughout the year, turning the ruin into an active refuge for these fast-flying birds. This wildlife presence adds an unexpected dimension to visiting the historical site.
