Coolhill Castle

Coolhill Castle is a medieval structure in County Kilkenny featuring two distinct towers: a round keep that rises three stories and a square demesne tower set on the eastern side. The fortification sits on a cliff above the River Barrow, commanding views across the surrounding landscape.

The castle was built in the 13th century and initially belonged to Henry de Rupe, who held it in 1318 before it passed to the Mountgarret family. This change of hands reflects the shifting power dynamics among families controlling the region over several centuries.

The structure incorporates traditional Irish defensive elements, including machicolations above doorways and a strategic murder-hole at the double entrance.

The castle sits on a clifftop roughly 2 kilometers northeast of The Rower and is reachable from nearby roads. It is best visited during daylight when you can fully explore the structures and enjoy views across the river.

The ground floor room holds large alcoves and preserves its original vaulted ceiling marked with wicker impressions from medieval building methods. These traces offer rare glimpses into the construction techniques of the period.
