Togher Castle

Togher Castle, Stone tower house in County Cork, Ireland

Togher Castle is a rectangular tower house in County Cork that rises approximately 18 meters high. Its exterior walls feature smooth mortar covering with windows decorated with limestone details typical of the Cork region.

The tower was built in 1590 by Tadhg an Fhorsa of the MacCarthys following land grants from Queen Elizabeth I. This construction marked a pivotal moment in establishing MacCarthy control over this part of Ireland.

This residence served the MacCarthy family as a way to display their authority across the region. Visitors can still spot heraldic symbols that reflect the family's importance to local history.

The tower stands on private farmland in the River Bandon valley and requires permission from the landowner to visit. Planning ahead and arranging access in advance is essential for those wanting to see this site.

The tower features two projecting machicolations at opposite corners built for defensive purposes. Inside there is a small windowless chamber once used as a dungeon, revealing how residents approached security.
