Weizmann Institute of Science, Research institute in Rehovot, Israel.
The Weizmann Institute of Science is a research facility on a large campus in Rehovot, south of Tel Aviv. The complex spreads across several buildings with laboratories, lecture halls, and open green areas between the individual faculties.
The foundation was laid in 1934 as the Daniel Sieff Research Institute to promote scientific research in what was then British Mandate Palestine. After the founding of Israel, the facility received its current name in 1949 in honor of Chaim Weizmann.
The campus carries the name of Chaim Weizmann, first president of Israel and a respected chemist whose work continues to shape the identity of the institute. Researchers from different countries work here on scientific questions and share laboratories and libraries.
The campus is usually open to visitors, though some areas require permission to enter. Guided tours are offered and provide insight into the research work and the architecture of the complex.
The Garden of Science on the grounds displays art installations related to mathematical and physical phenomena, designed to be accessible even for laypeople. Some of these sculptures invite visitors to touch and experiment.
