The museum began operations in 1951 with a Marc Chagall exhibition and moved to its current location in 1977, in a former Anglican school for girls.
The museum's permanent collection contains works by Israeli artists Joseph Zaritsky, Mordechai Ardon, and Michal Na'aman, representing national artistic development.
The museum provides free admission to security forces and evacuees from border areas, with regular exhibitions running for several months at 26 Shabtai Levi Street.
The museum features Kenji Yanobe's Sun Child sculpture outside its entrance and operates as part of a network including the Mané Katz Museum.
