Jerusalem Khan Theatre, Repertory theatre in Jerusalem, Israel
The Jerusalem Khan Theatre is a repertory theater in Jerusalem, housed in a restored 19th-century building close to the old railway station. It has two performance halls and an open stone courtyard that connects the different parts of the complex.
The site was once a caravanserai that sheltered travelers who could not reach the Old City gates before they closed at night. In the 19th century the building was rebuilt, and it later became a theater.
The theater performs in Hebrew, which means non-Hebrew speakers may want to check in advance whether a show offers English surtitles. The stone courtyard surrounding the stages is open to visitors even outside performance hours, making it a place people pass through as part of their daily walks.
The theater sits on a quiet street near the old railway station, reached by a paved path through the stone courtyard. Arriving a little early gives you time to walk around the outdoor spaces before a show begins.
The word "Khan" in the theater's name refers directly to its original function as a stopping place for merchants and travelers. This link between the building's past and present use is still visible in the structure of the courtyard, which kept the open layout of a traditional caravanserai.
