Mevaseret Zion, Residential settlement near Jerusalem, Israel
Mevaseret Zion extends across both sides of the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway and comprises fifteen neighborhoods situated at 717 meters elevation. A major shopping center at the town entrance houses approximately 80 businesses serving both residents and travelers.
The area held strategic importance as the site of a Roman fortress called Castellum and later a Crusader castle named Castellum Belveer during the medieval period. These fortifications controlled a key trade route between regions.
The community grew through immigration from Iraq, Kurdistan, North Africa, and Iran, creating a diverse population with both secular and religious traditions. This mix shapes daily life and social patterns throughout the settlement.
The settlement is easily accessible with established shopping facilities offering goods and services for all needs. Visitors should note that the terrain is hilly and sturdy footwear is advisable.
Some houses in the northern Rekhes Halilim neighborhood sit directly on the Green Line and cross the border between Israeli and Palestinian territory. A few of these structures are literally divided between two territories.
