Castel National Park, Crusader castle ruins in Mevaseret Zion, Israel.
Castel National Park is a fortified site in the Judean Mountains near Mevaseret Zion containing stone structures and defensive walls. The ruins sit on a high point overlooking the main highway connecting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
The site witnessed multiple battles during the 1948 War, with a decisive battle following the death of commander Abd al-Qadir al-Husayni. Control of this strategic location changed hands several times during the conflict.
The park preserves a memorial for Israeli soldiers with a monument created by Yitzhak Yamin, and displays about the blockade of Jerusalem remain visible to visitors walking the site.
The park is located about 8 kilometers west of Jerusalem along Highway 1 and provides visitors with detailed maps and guided tours. Walking routes lead through the archaeological remains, allowing you to explore the site at your own pace.
Romans built a fortress called Castellum at this location, which was later replaced by Crusaders with their own Castellum Belveer. Although these structures are no longer visible on the surface, archaeological finds confirm their former presence.
