Resurrection Church, Abu Ghosh, Crusader church in Abu Ghosh, Israel.
The Resurrection Church in Abu Ghosh is a Crusader church built on the foundations of a Roman fortress, featuring late Romanesque architecture with thick stone walls and vaulted ceilings. The building contains a two-level crypt structure, beneath which an ancient spring continues to flow.
The Crusaders built the church in 1140 as part of their military complex, identifying the location as the biblical site of Emmaus. The structure thus stands at a place held to be religiously significant by pilgrims for centuries.
The church displays 12th-century frescoes in Byzantine style depicting religious scenes that were restored between 1995 and 2001. Visitors can still see these painted artworks on the interior walls today.
The church welcomes visitors daily except on Sundays and religious holidays when it remains closed. Benedictine monks living on the grounds offer guided tours that explain the interior and the site's history.
An ancient spring flows beneath the church's underground chamber, continuing to run through the crypt to this day. This natural water source was a key reason why the Crusaders chose this specific location for their settlement.
