Tel Akko

Tel Akko is an archaeological excavation site on the Mediterranean coast near Acre, featuring ancient structures, walls, and multiple layers of settlements from different periods. The dig reveals what lies beneath the modern city and shows how communities inhabited this location for thousands of years.

The settlement began in the Bronze Age and developed into a major port along Mediterranean trade routes, where different peoples ruled in succession. Over centuries, the center of activity shifted westward toward modern Acre, gradually abandoning the original site.

Tel Akko displays the traces of Canaanites, Phoenicians, Assyrians, Persians, and Greeks through remains and objects you can observe on the ground. Each civilization left its own building styles and crafted items that tell their story to visitors today.

The site sits right along the coast and is easy to reach from outside, but bring comfortable shoes and sun protection for your visit. The excavation area is open and spread out, so allow time for a leisurely walk and check access conditions before arriving.

The location once served as a natural harbor, one of the few in the region, making it a highly valued trading hub. This geographic advantage explains why so many different cultures settled here one after another and why control of the site was worth fighting for.
