Hubballi, Commercial center in Dharwad district, India
Hubballi forms a twin city with neighboring Dharwad in Karnataka and spreads across a hilly plateau about 650 meters (2130 feet) above sea level. Wide roads connect densely built residential areas with industrial quarters housing factories for textiles and agricultural processing.
The settlement arose in the 11th century under the name Rayara Hubli and served as a trading post for cotton and spices. The Bhavani Shankar temple stands among the oldest surviving structures and was built during this founding period according to inscriptions.
Hubli Junction serves as one of the largest hubs for cargo and passengers in northern Karnataka and has shaped the surrounding neighborhoods for over a century. Markets and residential quarters grew up around the workshops, where traders sell textiles and agricultural goods from the surrounding villages.
A stay in the city works best as a stopover on longer journeys through Karnataka, since several main routes meet here. Hotels and restaurants cluster near the railway station and along the main thoroughfares.
The many cotton processing facilities still shape the cityscape, even though many of the historic mills have changed function. Some warehouses from the colonial era now serve as commercial spaces and market halls in the center.
