Navagraha Jain Temple, Jain temple in Varur, Hubballi, India.
Navagraha Jain Temple is a religious complex in Hubballi, Karnataka, made up of nine individual shrines, large stone sculptures, and open garden areas connecting them. A residential building on the grounds provides rooms and meals for pilgrims who come to stay for several days.
Construction of the temple began in 2005 under the guidance of a Jain spiritual teacher and was completed within a few years. The speed of the work was made possible by strong backing from the local Jain community in Hubballi.
The name Navagraha refers to the nine celestial bodies in Hindu and Jain tradition, and here each of the nine shrines is dedicated to a different Tirthankara. Visitors walk a circuit through the grounds, stopping at each small shrine in turn, which gives the visit a meditative rhythm.
Visitors should wear modest clothing and remove their shoes before entering any of the shrines, as is standard at Jain places of worship. Those who want to spend more than a day can ask about rooms and meals available on the grounds.
The large stone figure standing on the grounds is said to have been carved from a single block of rock, a technique rarely used at this scale in modern religious construction. This type of monolithic sculpture has a long history in Jain tradition, most famously seen at Shravanabelagola.
