Attiveri Bird Sanctuary

Attiveri Bird Sanctuary is a protected area in Uttara Kannada centered around a reservoir, where riverine forests blend with cultivated farmland. This combination of water, trees, and open fields creates habitat for numerous bird species year-round.

The site began as a traditional reservoir built to supply water to local communities. Over time it gained recognition as a sanctuary, becoming crucial for birds migrating through Karnataka.

Local farming communities surrounding the site have shaped the landscape through traditional crop cultivation, which provides natural feeding areas for birds. These communities maintain a close relationship with the sanctuary, understanding how their work supports the wildlife that passes through.

Visit early in the morning when birds are most active and the light is best for spotting them. Wear comfortable shoes and bring binoculars to observe birds more clearly from a distance.

The sanctuary attracts black-headed ibis, Eurasian spoonbills, pied kingfishers, and Indian grey hornbills that arrive and depart with the changing seasons. This seasonal movement makes each visit different, offering new bird sightings depending on when you come.
