Kamala Narayana Temple, Degaon, Hindu temple in Degaon, India
Kamala Narayana Temple is a Hindu shrine in Degaon with three shrines connected by a pillared hall running from north to south along its western side. The structure creates spaces for worship with distinct rooms for prayer and religious activities flowing in sequence.
The temple was completed in 1174 under architect Tippoja's direction at the commission of Queen Kamala Devi of the Kadamba dynasty. This period of rule saw temple construction as a form of royal patronage for religious architecture in the region.
The temple honors Narayana and displays different deities across its three shrines that visitors come to worship. The veneration of goddess Lakshmi and the deity Maruti reflects local prayer practices that continue to this day.
The temple sits about 5 kilometers from Kittur and 24 kilometers from Bailhongal in Karnataka and remains an active place of worship. Visitors should expect simple pathways and open courtyards that are busiest during prayer times.
The temple displays a large carved lotus in inverted position on its ceiling, supported by pillars decorated with sculpted lions. This reversed orientation and the lion carvings give the interior a distinctive artistic detail that catches visitors' eyes.
