Belgaum Fort, Military fortification in Belgaum, Karnataka, India.
Belgaum Fort is a military fortification in Karnataka surrounded by thick stone walls, deep moats, and defensive structures. Inside the perimeter stand temples, mosques, and administrative buildings that reveal the layered history of the site.
The fort was founded in 1204 by Bichi Raja of the Ratta Dynasty. Over centuries, successive rulers including the Adil Shahis and Mughals rebuilt and fortified the structure.
The fort holds temples of various faiths, Jain shrines, Hindu sanctuaries, and mosques all within the same walls. These buildings show how different communities shared the space over the centuries.
The fort sits at roughly 760 meters elevation near the Markandeya River and welcomes visitors. Allow time to walk through the different sections and buildings spread across the fortified grounds.
Mahatma Gandhi was held prisoner here by British authorities during the independence movement. This imprisonment remains a pivotal chapter in the fort's story and India's path to freedom.
