Se Cathedral

Se Cathedral is a place of worship built in Portuguese Manueline style with a rectangular floor plan in Old Goa. The structure shows typical Gothic elements and was built with stone and decorative details that reflect the architectural tradition of its era.

Construction started in 1562 as a monument to a military victory and aimed to strengthen religious authority in the region. The project grew from a desire to create a grand religious center that would reflect the power of those who ruled at that time.

The main altar with its depictions of Saint Catherine of Alexandria defines the interior and reflects the religious devotion of those who built it. The fourteen altars spread throughout the space show how central this place was to the faith of worshippers.

The building is freely accessible and can offer different levels of quietness depending on the time of day. It is best to visit early in the morning or late afternoon to enjoy the best light and fewer crowds.

Inside sits the Golden Bell, an impressive work of craftsmanship known for its warm, resonant sound. This bell is the largest of its kind in the entire state and stands as a fascinating piece of metalwork from a distant era.
