Museum of Christian Art, Christian art museum in Old Goa, India
The Museum of Christian Art occupies a historic convent building from the 16th century standing next to St Augustine Tower in Old Goa. It displays religious objects and artworks spanning several centuries, arranged throughout the baroque-style structure.
The building started as a convent for women in the 16th century and lay abandoned for many years before reopening as a museum in the 1990s. Major restoration work between 2017 and 2020 brought the structure back to its former condition and created space for the current exhibition.
The collection shows how Portuguese and Indian artistic traditions merged together over time. Visitors can see religious images that reflect this blend through different styles and techniques.
The museum sits on Monte Santo hill near other historic sites and is open to visitors every day. Guided tours are available to help you understand the artworks and the building's architecture better.
A special exhibition displays religious textiles from local churches featuring detailed embroidery in colored and metallic threads. These fabrics show how religious practice was expressed through traditional handcraft skills.
