Ponte Conde de Linhares

The Ponte Conde de Linhares stretches 3.2 kilometers across the Mandovi River flood plains, connecting Ribandar to Panaji through multiple stone arches.

Constructed in 1633-34 under Viceroy Miguel de Noronha, the bridge was engineered by Jesuits from the College of St. Paul using laterite stone and iliadola briformis tree trunks.

The bridge construction combines Portuguese engineering with local materials, representing the technical achievements of colonial Goa during the 17th century.

Traffic restrictions and speed limits protect the structure, while mangrove trees planted along the southern bank help prevent erosion of the causeway.

At the time of its completion in 1634, this causeway held the title of longest bridge in the world, featuring three eastern arches and thirty-eight western arches.
