Basilica of Bom Jesus, Catholic basilica in Old Goa, India
The Basilica of Bom Jesus is a church in Old Goa, North Goa district, India. The facade displays three entrances stacked vertically and large rectangular windows with circular openings above them.
Construction began in November 1594 under Archbishop Alexia de Menezes and finished in May 1605. During these years, the site developed into a center for Jesuit missionary work across Asia.
The cruciform layout follows Jesuit building traditions and allows visitors today to approach the silver shrine up close. Pilgrims arrive throughout the year to pray at the tomb, especially during the exposition when the mortal remains are displayed publicly.
Go early in the morning to avoid crowds and to see the light through the windows. The marble floor can be slippery, so it helps to walk carefully when entering the rooms.
The outer walls were deliberately left unplastered, showing the original stonework. This decision sets the building apart from other churches in the area and lets visitors read the construction method directly.
