Mahadev Temple, Tambdi Surla

Mahadev Temple is a Hindu sanctuary built from black basalt stone with detailed carvings of deities on its side panels. Four decorated columns support a stone roof above the main structure.

The sanctuary was built in the 12th century during the Kadamba period and remains the only preserved example of this architectural style in Goa. Its remote forest setting protected the structure from destruction during historical invasions.

The temple is dedicated to Shiva, with a Nandi statue placed in the open hall before the inner sanctum. You can see how the space serves as a center for meditation and prayer for those who visit.

The sanctuary is located within Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary, approximately 65 kilometers from Panaji. Stone steps lead down to the Surla River for ritual bathing and provide accessible routes to the main temple area.

The structure faces east, allowing dawn sunlight to directly illuminate the inner deity at sunrise. This careful orientation reveals how ancient builders used solar geometry to enhance the spiritual experience within the sanctuary.
