Gokak Falls, Natural waterfall in Konnur, India.
Gokak Falls is a waterfall in the Konnur area of Karnataka, where the Ghataprabha River plunges over red sandstone cliffs. The formation has a horseshoe-shaped outline, surrounded by vertical rock walls that form a deep gorge.
The gorge received a power station in the late 19th century, among the first of its kind in Asia. The facility used the force of the water flow and brought electric light to surrounding communities.
The name connects to traditional Kannada storytelling that has drawn travelers here for generations. Visitors often see families gathering along the riverbanks, organizing picnics while they watch the mist from the falling water.
The monsoon season brings the largest water flow and intensifies the roar of the falling masses. Visitors find viewing points along the upper cliff that open up the view of the horseshoe shape of the gorge.
A suspension bridge spans the gorge for considerable length and hovers above the rocky riverbed. Visitors can walk across the structure and feel the slight movement beneath their feet while the water roars far below.
