Mahalakshmi Temple, Hindu temple in Kolhapur, India
Mahalakshmi Temple is a Hindu place of worship in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, housing a dark stone figure about three feet tall decorated with precious stones. The walls are covered in carved patterns, and several smaller shrines surround the main hall.
The site was built in the 7th century under the rule of the Chalukya dynasty and follows a regional building style from that period. Over the centuries, the structure has been expanded and restored several times.
The temple carries the name of the goddess of prosperity and draws many faithful visitors each day who come with offerings and prayers. Inside, the floor is laid with stone slabs, and pilgrims walk clockwise around the central figure.
Visitors should wear modest clothing on the grounds and remove shoes before entering the prayer hall. Early morning hours are usually less crowded, allowing a calmer look at the interior.
The main figure holds a fruit, a mace, a shield, and a drinking bowl in its four hands. Behind the sculpture stands a lion carved from stone, serving as a guardian.
