Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary, Wildlife sanctuary in Kolhapur district, India.
Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature reserve located within the Western Ghats mountain range, featuring dense evergreen forests that cover a large area. The landscape includes steep hillsides, rocky outcrops, and flowing streams that support a diverse range of plant and animal life.
The sanctuary was established in 1958 by the Maharashtra government as Dajipur Wildlife Sanctuary and became the state's first protected wildlife area. Later it was renamed and incorporated into the UNESCO World Heritage designation of the Western Ghats.
The name comes from Radha, a deity in Hindu mythology, and nagari, meaning forest. Today it serves as a symbol of conservation efforts in the Western Ghats region.
Visitors can enter the sanctuary during morning and midday hours, with private vehicles generally permitted inside the reserve. During the monsoon season, conditions become muddy and access may be restricted or more challenging.
The sanctuary is home to a significant population of gaur, a wild ox species rarely seen elsewhere in this region. This large animal attracts researchers and visitors seeking to observe the species in its natural habitat.
