Sindhudurg Fort, Sea fort in Sindhudurg district, India.
Sindhudurg Fort sits on an island in the Arabian Sea and covers about 19 hectares with thick stone walls all around. The walls rise roughly 30 feet (9 meters) high and measure around 12 feet (4 meters) wide.
Chhatrapati Shivaji commissioned the construction of this sea fortress in 1664. Portuguese engineers and local craftsmen completed the structure within three years.
The name means fort in the ocean and describes the location on the small island precisely. Temples and shrines inside the walls are still visited today by pilgrims and travelers.
Boats depart from the harbor in Malvan to the island and bring visitors directly to the fortress. Access is limited during monsoon months when the sea becomes rougher.
A stone block inside carries the pressed imprints of hands and feet of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. These markings are considered a direct connection to the founder.
