Shivgad, Military fort in Kolhapur district, India
Shivgad is a hilltop fort situated in the Sahyadri Range at roughly 2400 meters elevation, surrounded by thick forest and steep slopes. It features double walls, ancient bastions, and remnants of religious structures that reflect centuries of military occupation.
The fort was built as a watchtower for trade routes through the Phonda pass beginning in the 16th century. By 1818, British East India Company forces took control and the site lost its earlier defensive importance.
The site holds stories of warrior leaders and local devotion tied to Hindu traditions. Pilgrims and trekkers today visit to connect with both the military heritage and the spiritual significance woven into this hilltop.
The climb takes roughly two hours starting from Gadgesakhal village and requires decent fitness. Nearby Dajipur village or Radhanagari town serve as base points for organizing your visit.
The fort holds a memorial stone locally called Ugvai Devi that marks a blend of military construction and spiritual tradition. Few visitors realize this stone reflects personal stories tied to the fort's past inhabitants.
