Purnagad Fort, Coastal fort in Ratnagiri district, India
Purnagad Fort is a coastal fort in Ratnagiri district, built from black basalt rock on a northern hill overlooking the sea. The structure has a rectangular layout with two entrance gates facing the Muchkundi River Creek delta.
The fort was built during the Maratha period and served as a naval base for Admiral Kanhoji Angre. He directed operations against British forces in the region from this position.
The entrance gate displays carved representations of the Sun, Moon, and Ganesha, which were meaningful symbols for the local population. A Hanuman temple inside the walls shows that the fort was also used as a place of worship.
The fort sits roughly 25 kilometers from Ratnagiri city and can be reached by road. From the entrance, staircases on all four sides allow visitors to reach the upper parts of the structure.
Beside the main entrance, there are several small security chambers that were designed to slow down and control anyone entering the fort. This type of layered entry system is rarely seen in such good condition and gives a clear sense of how access was managed.
