Vishalgad, State Protected Monument in Kolhapur district, India.
Vishalgad is a protected fort in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. The structure sits on a ridge at 1130 meters (3707 feet) elevation between two mountain passes, overlooking valleys and trade routes below.
The fort was built in the early 16th century under the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur. It later came under Maratha control and served as a refuge for Shivaji Maharaj in 1660 during his escape from Panhala.
The name roughly translates to large fort, reflecting its role as a watchtower over the surrounding valleys. Visitors walking through the complex notice both Hindu and Muslim elements in the architecture and daily worship.
The climb to the fort requires moderate fitness and follows mountain paths that can become slippery during monsoon rains. Several roads from Kolhapur lead to the base, where visitors must continue on foot for the final stretch.
A memorial marks the spot where Baji Prabhu Deshpande and his soldiers fought the pursuing forces to cover Shivaji's retreat. This rearguard action allowed the king to reach the fort safely.
