Kumbhoj

Kumbhoj, Jain pilgrimage site in Kolhapur District, Maharashtra, India

Description

Kumbhoj is a Jain pilgrimage complex with multiple temples including Jal Mandir, Ratnatraya, Shantinath, Chandaprabhu, and Adinath spread across the grounds. The site also features replicas of important Jain pilgrimage destinations like Gajpantha, Taranga, Mangi-Tungi, Sonagiri, and Pavagiri.

History

The site was established in 1156 when followers installed an artistic idol of Lord Bahubali, initiated by ascetic saint Shri 108 Shrut Sagarji Maharaj. A 28-foot monolithic statue of Bahubali was later erected in 1963, adding a striking vertical element to the pilgrimage complex.

Culture

The site brings together replicas of several sacred Jain destinations in one location, creating a spiritual landscape that mirrors places scattered across India. Visitors experience different spiritual centers of the Jain tradition without traveling to distant locations.

Practical

The location is easily reached by public transport, with regular buses from Kolhapur and Sangli cities and Sangli Railway Station offering additional access. Visitors should allow time to explore the various temple structures and climb the steps to reach the monolithic statue.

Did you know?

The complex was designed as a kind of spiritual miniature India, allowing pilgrims to visit multiple sacred destinations without traveling across the country. This concept makes it a special destination for those seeking to experience several important Jain sites within a short timeframe.
