Kasivisvesvara Temple, Lakkundi

Kasivisvesvara Temple is a Hindu temple in Lakkundi that contains two sanctums facing opposite directions. The larger shrine holds Shiva as its primary deity, while the smaller one is dedicated to Surya the sun god.

The temple was built during the 11th century under the Western Chalukya Empire. An inscription dating to 1087 CE found on a beam inside the mantapa hall confirms its origins during this early medieval period.

The temple walls display detailed stone carvings depicting stories from Hindu texts. These works show the skill of craftspeople who shaped this region's artistic traditions.

The temple sits in a peaceful setting and can be explored on foot at a relaxed pace. Wear comfortable shoes as the grounds have uneven surfaces, and note that interior areas offer limited natural light and can be cool.

This temple blends three major architectural styles of Indian temple design into a single structure. The rare combination of Nagara, Vesara, and Dravida elements demonstrates the creative range of builders from this era.
