Mahabodhi Temple

This temple in Bodh Gaya rises over 180 feet (55 meters) into the sky with hundreds of carved figures and ornaments covering its dark stone walls. Four smaller towers at the corners echo the shape of the central pyramid and frame a paved courtyard with low walls and narrow passages between several prayer halls.

Ashoka built a shrine here in the 3rd century BCE after converting to Buddhism. The current tower structure dates from several centuries later and underwent major rebuilding in the 19th century after heavy damage.

Prayer flags flutter around the ancient tree while devotees from different countries kneel in long rows on stone pavement, performing full-body prostrations. This form of meditation forms a central part of many pilgrims' visits and continues throughout the day.

The busiest times occur at sunrise and late afternoon when pilgrimage groups gather for communal prayers. Visitors should cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes before entering prayer areas.

A descendant of the original Bodhi tree still grows beside the shrine and casts its shadow over a stone platform marking the meditation spot. Researchers have maintained this tree through cuttings to ensure it descends directly from the historical original.
