Tawang district, Administrative district in western Arunachal Pradesh, India
The district extends across 2,172 square kilometers of mountainous terrain, with elevations ranging between 6,000 and 22,000 feet in northeastern India.
The region belonged to the Monyul kingdom from 500 BC to 600 AD before coming under Bhutan and Tibet influence until the 1914 Simla Accord.
The Monpa people form the main ethnic group in Tawang, speaking Monpa language and practicing Buddhism through the largest Buddhist monastery in India.
Visitors need to obtain inner line permits before entering Tawang district, which contains 218 villages spread across three administrative subdivisions.
The Gourichen mountain peak reaches 22,500 feet above sea level, making it the highest point in a district where yak farming occurs at lower altitudes.
