Purwa Falls, Waterfall in Rewa District, India

Purwa Falls is a waterfall on the Tamsa River in Semariya, Rewa district, Madhya Pradesh. The river drops about 70 metres in a single white column at the right of a red and brown cliff banded with horizontal layers and stained orange and rust; stepped rock ledges with green shrub rise on the left, a flat grassy plateau lies above, and dark green water pools at the base.

The falls developed through the Tamsa River's geological processes over centuries of erosion. These natural changes shaped the landscape and created the cascade feature visible today.

Near the falls lies Basavan Mama, a sacred site and the centre of faith for the people of Rewa, who come here on pilgrimage. The waterfall itself is on the Tamsa River beside Semariya, and visitors combine the two in one outing.

Purwa Falls lies near Semariya in Rewa district, close to the Basavan Mama site, and is reached by road from the Basaman Mama Semariya Road. The Tamsa drops about 70 metres here, so the rock ledges beside the water are wet and slippery; wear sturdy footwear. The flow is strongest after the monsoon rains, when the fall is at its fullest.

The water flow changes dramatically during the monsoon season when rainfall increases significantly. This seasonal variation makes the falls appear much more powerful than in drier months.
