Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, Business school in Vastrapur, Ahmedabad, India.
The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad is a business school in the Vastrapur district that combines classrooms, offices, and dormitories on a sprawling campus. The grounds cover 41 hectares and consist of several zones with libraries, lecture halls, and administrative buildings.
The school was founded in 1961 by Vikram Sarabhai and Kasturbhai Lalbhai to foster economic skills in India. Sixteen years later, the distinctive brick buildings designed by American architect Louis Kahn were completed.
The buildings carry Indian names such as Ravi J. Matthai and Vikram Sarabhai, references to local leaders who advanced education in the country. The layout combines open courtyards with brick facades, echoing traditional cloister design and inner-city squares that create a quiet learning environment.
The campus is located in the northwest of Ahmedabad and can be reached by rickshaw or taxi from the city center. Visitors should note the entrance controls, as the grounds are mainly intended for students and staff.
The library on campus was named after Vikram Sarabhai, a physicist and founder of Indian space research. The collection includes rare manuscripts on economic history and regional trade traditions from Gujarat.
