Villa Shodhan, Brutalist single-family residence in Ahmedabad, India
Villa Shodhan features raw concrete surfaces across three levels, incorporating geometric forms with a flat parasol roof and prominent brise-soleils on its facades.
The residence, completed in 1956, was initially designed for Surottam Hutheesing but was later acquired by Shyamubhai Shodhan, who transformed it into a family dwelling.
Le Corbusier integrated elements of traditional Ahmedabad architecture into the design, including a double-height living room that reflects local residential patterns.
The building maintains natural climate control through its diagonal orientation, triple-height terrace, and strategic placement of windows and openings.
The floors throughout the villa are paved with black Madras stones, arranged according to specific Modulor dimensions defined by Le Corbusier.
