M. J. Library, Public library in Ellisbridge, Ahmedabad, India.
M. J. Library is a public library in the Ellisbridge area of Ahmedabad, housed in a building with an octagonal entrance hall topped by a dome. The structure follows a Rajputana Colonial style, combining overhanging eaves, carved brackets, and stone lattice screens across its facade.
The library opened in 1938, with Mahatma Gandhi donating books from his personal collection to start it. That first gift gave the place its early identity as a reading space rooted in the civic life of Ahmedabad.
The library is named after a local patron and draws readers of all ages through its doors every day. The reading rooms have a calm rhythm to them, with students and older visitors sitting side by side at wooden tables under high ceilings.
The library is open every day with both reading areas and borrowing services available to visitors. Checking the current hours ahead of your visit is a good idea, as they can change on public holidays.
Architect Claude Batley designed the building so that its stone screens and overhanging eaves work together to block direct sun and reduce heat inside. The result is an interior that feels noticeably cooler than the street outside, without any mechanical cooling.
