Gaekwad Haveli

The Gaekwad Haveli is a historic mansion in central Ahmedabad marked by heavy gates and irregularly built walls. The compound contains three distinct sections, including a garden area and a fortified citadel.

The building was constructed in 1738 and originally served as the seat of Maratha rulers. It later became a British army barracks and was eventually converted into a railway depot.

The building reflects traditional Indian townhouse design adapted to the hot local climate, with natural ventilation systems built into the rooms. The open courtyards and thick walls help keep the interior cool and comfortable even on the hottest days.

The building underwent a major restoration by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation in 2014, with improvements to the facade, main gate, and watchtower for public access. The restored watchtower now offers visitors a vantage point to view the entire compound from above.

A police museum within the watchtower honors Vasant and Rajab, two officers who lost their lives in 1946 during communal riots. The museum preserves their memory and marks an important moment in the city's past.
