Manek Burj, Medieval bastion at Sabarmati riverbank in Ahmedabad, India.
Manek Burj is a stone cylinder on the Sabarmati riverbank that forms part of the Bhadra Fort complex in Ahmedabad. The structure rises prominently above the surrounding area and served as a defensive position protecting the fort.
Ahmed Shah I founded Manek Burj in 1411 as the starting point for his new capital of Gujarat at this location. The tower marked the beginning of the city's expansion from the riverbank.
Local descendants of Saint Maneknath perform annual ceremonies at the bastion during Vijayadashami and the city's foundation day celebrations.
The tower sits directly on the riverbank and is best reached from riverside paths or the city center area. Moisture from the river and wet ground can be common here, so sturdy shoes are recommended.
A stepwell called Manek Kuva was once hidden beneath the tower, drawing water directly from the river for the city's early residents. When the Sabarmati shifted its course, the well became disconnected from its water source and fell into disuse.
