Atal Pedestrian Bridge, Pedestrian bridge in Ahmedabad, India
The Atal Pedestrian Bridge is a footbridge in Ahmedabad district, India, built from glass and steel that extends 300 meters (984 feet) across the Sabarmati River. It links the eastern and western sections of the riverfront, allowing pedestrians to cross directly between both sides of the city.
The footbridge opened to the public in 2022, marking a major step forward in the infrastructure development of this rapidly growing city. Its opening provided the first direct pedestrian route across the river in this section of the urban area.
The design of this footbridge draws from the tradition of kite flying that defines the city during the Uttarayan festival. The color patterns on the structure echo the bright hues that fill the sky during this local celebration.
Entry costs between 30 and 50 rupees for adults, while children aged between 3 and 12 pay 30 rupees to access the bridge. Visitors may want to consider evening hours when the lighting comes on and temperatures are cooler than during the day.
Along the central 100 meters (328 feet) that span the water, the bridge features seating areas and small food kiosks offering snacks and drinks. The dynamic LED lighting changes colors after dark, creating different moods along the entire walkway.
