Ellis Bridge, Truss bridge in Ahmedabad, India
The Ellis Bridge extends 480 meters across the Sabarmati River, connecting the eastern and western sections of Ahmedabad with its steel framework structure.
British engineers constructed the initial wooden bridge in 1870, which was later replaced by a steel structure in 1892 under engineer Himmatlal Dhirajram Bhachech.
Mahatma Gandhi selected Ellis Bridge as the starting point for his notable Dandi March in 1930, marking a significant moment in India's independence movement.
The bridge received concrete extensions on both sides in 1997 to accommodate increased traffic flow while maintaining the original steel structure in the center.
The steel components for the bridge construction were imported from Birmingham, with the total cost of 407,000 rupees remaining under the allocated budget.
