Vijali Ghar

Vijali Ghar is an Art Deco office building on Relief Road in Ahmedabad, recognizable by the horizontal lines running across its curved facade. A concrete overhang separates the upper floor section and gives the exterior a distinctive layered appearance.

Claude Batley designed this building in the early 1900s as the headquarters for Ahmedabad Electricity Company. It later became the home of Torrent Power, continuing its role as a power distribution center.

The facade displays both Gujarati and English lettering, showing how the city mixed different languages in public life during its growth period. This bilingual approach reflects the diverse communities and business practices that shaped Ahmedabad's character.

The building sits on Relief Road and continues to function as an administrative center for power distribution. Visitors can view the exterior from the street and appreciate the architectural details from the outside.

The building features innovative materials from its era, such as reinforced concrete and steel tubes used as decorative railings. This blend of modern construction materials with decorative design was uncommon in Ahmedabad at the time.
